Winter Dawn

by Mary Brunini McArdle

I planted pastel pansies in my garden
The first week of November;
Tired of the summer’s bleary sun,
I longed for blossoms blending
With the sky.

I steered them toward the east,
So that they’d merge into
The sunrise on a winter morning,
Muting the edges of its bitter chill
With gentle color.
