Prairie Sky

thunder clouds boil
looming ominously over
the greening fields
like some fell bird aflight
staining the prairie sky
with inky night
at mid-day
as they hurl
their burden of rain
on the plain
below

thunder birds soar
on wings of storm
enveloped by clouds
of flickering night
and with shards
of forked light
they slash at the land
below

and then you feel the power
of the thunder birds’ roar
unleashed across the scene
as it splinters the day
and cracks the prairie sky
asunder
