Shai Afsai’s articles and stories have appeared in many literary and historical journals, among other publications.
“The Shomer” is a story about virtue and how a person decides what virtue is. Josh Ganzenberg is a shomer, among other things, a person who officiates at wakes and recites scripture to bless the departed.
Now, Ganzenberg is really quite a talented person; he’s knowledgeable enough to become a professor, which is the relatively comfortable occupation that his would-be fiancée, Rebecca, envisions for him. Well, okay, that’s not so bad...
But a dead man, Ruben Katz, suddenly comes back to life and has a little conversation with Josh Ganzenberg. Katz doesn’t tell Ganzenberg what virtue is or what Ganzenberg ought to do, only what he, Katz, wishes he had done. And Ganzenberg finds that a voice from beyond the grave is well worth heeding.
