Charles D. Tarlton

Charles retired from teaching about seven years ago and has since turned to writing poetry and short prose, which he has published extensively, to acclaim.

“Take Just One” may be more a vignette than a short story, but the illustrations and “slice of life” account of the San Francisco scene are bound to catch the readers’ attention.

In “Take Just One” the artist is a nameless recluse; he puts in only one appearance where we hear him speak, and he does so cryptically. Even though he disappears from public view, his art catches the imagination of the public. The point, though subtle, is hard to miss: art is a dialogue not only between artist and work but also between the audience and the work.
