Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Vera Mont
Vera lives in a “complicated” house in rural Ontario. It has five cats and seven doors. She writes stories in her spare time.
“Drive Safely!” is an interior monologue about the perils of chauffeuring an ultra-modern luxury sedan in the not too distant future. Readers may gradually realize who’s talking, and the ending may come as a confirmation of their suspicions rather than as a surprise.
Is the story unrealistic? One may have reservations about the Utilitarian philosophy embodied in the driver’s ethics, but one thing is sure: cyclists and pedestrians are often heedless. In one Ontario university town, students wear black almost as a uniform, especially at night. And many seem to have come fresh from the farm, where the only traffic is the odd cow.
