Coming to the Boil

Humans cling to the earth
with the electric kettle’s quiet roar
of bubbles forming on the element,
collapsing, barely formed,
their brief lives done, while others form,
thousands and thousands more,
the noise crescendos to orchestral chaos
until the bubble holds and, lengthening,
will break from the element and rise
boiling up into a free wild space.
