“Half an Hour Glass” will start by amusing readers with the setting and characterization: a young couple’s bringing a sentimental wish to a sorceress in a midnight visit. Yes, the sorceress can give them what they want, but she doesn’t think much of it, judging by the sour glances she casts at the two lovebirds. She is right, of course. The couple’s subsequent close shave with an armed robber confirms that it’s best to hedge one’s bets.
