Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
David Armstrong
David lives with his family in northern California, although he says he still reverts at times to the accent of his native Brooklyn after spending his youth in Colorado Springs and earning a degree in English from Sacramento State University. David is a retired musician and a fan of the literary works of Neil Gaiman.
“On Becoming a Writer” has internal qualities that tempt one to classify it as a short story rather than as an essay. Quite understandably, too; the author has a lot of fun satirizing well-intentioned but ultimately hopeless efforts to offer instruction on how to be an artist. If an editor may join the conversation, one can agree with the author by saying that art comes not from following rules and filling in blanks, so to speak, but from giving the subconscious food for thought and then listening to the results.
